Another point that I dont think should be up for debate is the fact that we have the best health care system in the entire world. Granted, it isnt perfect. But people from all over the world come here when they want the best care possible. We need to be very, very careful when we start tinkering with something that is already very good.

Can you think of any other industry where the person providing the service is not the who who determines what they will be paid.

I heard on NPR this morning a little diddy about the consumer's lack of knowledge/information. (i.e. they compared a doctor to a auto mechanic). Unless you are Brandon, when you take your car into the shop and discuss the symptoms of a problem with the mechanic - you usually have no idea whether the $1000 fix he's suggesting is really necessary or if the guy is a crook and his whole business model is to preform unnecessary work for mega mulah.
At least for me, I know that undoubtedly when I take my car in - I always suspect that the guy's trying to scam me even if he in fact really wasn't. I think that for many of us, health care costs instigate the exact same feelings because we are so ignorant to medical procedures, terminology, etc.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing. I want my doctor to know everything about the newest and grandest 'generally unknowns to the public.' They deserve the pay since they took the time to learn this stuff. All I'm saying is that we put alot of trust into our 'industry' of health care providers and it may be all these unknown and uneasy feelings felt by the general public that fuel such emotional responses to proposed changes to something that they already know nothing about...
