Oh snap... unfortunate phrasing there... The meaning was Spencer W Kimball, who was a JR Apostle during David O McKay's tenure, would later receive the revelation when he was church president.

So the revelation came to Spencer W. Kimball when he was a junior apostle? Why didn't it come to the president of the church? I'm very interested in this.

I too encountered the "old timere" in Brazil. I am not not so sure if it was race that bothered them. I think a lot of it was socio-economic. the members of the church were of european descent but they were also the wealthy and the well educated. So I am not sure if they were disheartened with the color of their skin as much as the change in class and culture. Not saying that it was right, but i think it is grayer than just plain race.

Yup. Not to derail, but depending how you define the word "doctrine", even those change from time to time. Certain things we think will never change (Faith in Christ, Repentance, etc), but that's the beauty of believing in modern revelation, things can (and will) change! Certainly the priesthood ban was taught over the years as doctrine, and many people viewed it as a change of doctrine. So we just get in the weeds a bit when it comes to definitions and perceptions of "doctrines", "practices", and "policies".

Appreciate your thoughts. Especially given that every lds church member must come to grips with this history at some point.

My only personal experience to date was when I went to college and was taught a Book of Mormon class by an African professor who had spent years answering the question with "I don't know why" and then going on to explain that his faith/beliefs did not require a reason. Wow, that's conviction... and I'm sure that I was influenced by that experience.

I also appreciate you distinguishing the difference between eternal, unchanging doctrine and Church policy as this is sometimes mis-understood and mis-represented by those both inside and outside of the church.
